Exploring Careers/Occupations

These web sites present different strategies that you can use to gather information about occupational fields in order to make informed decisions. You can get information by relating different majors to potential careers, by gathering information about a particular occupation that you may have in mind,  by getting insights from people who are working in a variety of occupations, including alumni from The Ohio State University, or by accessing the different OSU career services available on campus.

Exploring Occupations by Majors
Austin Peay State University Gives extensive listings of majors with links to common career areas, typical employers, and strategies designed to maximize career opportunities upon completion of a four-year degree.  Courtesy of Austin Peay State University.
Career Zone Lists several occupations giving a detail information about job descriptions, personal knowledge, levels of education and school programs, as well as wages, job outlook, and similar jobs. Occupations are provided for the following fields: Engineering and Technology, Business and Information System, Natural and Agricultural Sciences, Arts and Humanities, Health Services, Human and Public Services. 
Jobsmart A comprehensive list of occupations by fields of interests.

What can I do with a Family and Child Studies Major? This web site covers the diversity of child and family policy careers, which can be pursued across private, non-profit, academic, and government settings and can begin with formal training or through experiential learning in internships, fellowships, volunteer positions, or jobs at all life stages.
What can I do with an Allied Med Major? Features information on a careers in health care, including pharmacy technician, respiratory therapy, dietetics, health information management, physical therapy, among others.
Getting Information About Occupations
Occupational Outlook Handbook This site describes what workers do on the job, the working conditions, the training and education needed, earnings, and expected job prospects in a wide range of occupations. It is an on-line version of a standard resource found in career services centers. Go to OOH-search A-Z index to locate the occupation you want to learn about. Many of the sites listed above link to this site for their descriptions of occupations.
Career One Stop Comprehensive source of labor market information. To learn about career field select Career Resource Library, then explore by occupation.
O*Net Search for occupations based on your skills or simply explore different occupations based on different features.
Ohio Job and Family Services Your source for reports and data about employment levels, unemployment rates, wages and earnings, employment projections, jobs, training resources and careers in the state of Ohio.

Jobprofiles.com This web site covers the personal side of work, rewards, stressful parts, basic skills, challenges of the future, and advice of experienced workers on entering their field.
College View This section contains real-world profiles of many different types of career opportunities.
OSU Career Services
The Ohio State Career Services Career Services at Ohio State are decentralized which means individual academic units provide career assistance to students enrolled specifically in those colleges.  In addition several other units (academic and non-academic) provide career services to students regardless of college of enrollment (for example Career Connection, and Counseling and Consultation Service).
ASC Career Services In each OSU major listed in the College of Art and Sciences, you can find out what careers are possible with that major, internship opportunities, grad school options, beginning salaries and professional associations. Career Counselors also assist students with employment placement.
Business Career Services View Power Point slide presentations for various business majors. Each presentation covers career areas, sample job titles, career path, companies that hire this major, salary information, professional organizations and more. Career Counselors assist students with employment placement.
College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences The Career Service Center provides a variety of services to students, employers, and faculty and staff. They are a decentralized office working to provide the best service possible to all constituents of the College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences and the School of Natural Resources.
College of Engineering Assists Ohio State B.S., M.S. and Ph.D. Engineering students seeking full - time post- graduate employment.
College of Education and Human Ecology Provides students with an important list of referrals for job postings, resumes, cover letters and interviewing.
School of Natural Resources The School of Natural Resources offers a Career Counselor for consultation on opportunities for employment.
